Our elevator speech:
By marrying “don’t tread on me” to “to each his own” – by reinvigorating sovereignty – the U.S. could help restore order to the world. By getting other countries to self-police, the U.S. would no longer have to engage in global policing or nation building. We Americans would be free to safely repair our own social fabric. We could do so without turning isolationist. Instead, by reprising our role as an exemplar – by saying loudly and clearly “we’ll be us, you be you” – we’d free others to make as much as possible of their sovereignty, too. Just imagine how different the world might be if foreign leaders were held accountable for the actions of their citizens; if in exchange for the deference they receive as heads of state their duty were to guarantee security to their citizens and to us, they’d have to deliver better services. This is the quid pro quo sovereignty promises.
